Hometown Tech Helpof Roanoke

What we help with

If it plugs in or needs a password, we can help. Your Helper comes to your home and works on your own devices.

Tech help, in plain words.

  • The thing we're asked about most

    Accounts, scams, and security

Lost passwords, two-step codes, and the feeling that someone got into your account. If you think you've been hacked, we change your passwords in the right order, check for anything left behind, and explain what happened in plain words.

  • Phones and tablets

Setting up a new phone and moving your photos over. Bigger text, louder sound, hearing-aid pairing, FaceTime, texting, voicemail, and clearing out a full phone.

  • Computers

Updates, slow computers, email that stopped working, and unwanted pop-ups. We also set up backups and move your files to a new computer.

  • Printers

Getting it connected to Wi-Fi, fixing ink and driver trouble, and showing you how to scan to your email.

  • Home Wi-Fi

Resetting the router, changing the Wi-Fi password, and connecting your devices. We can sit beside you while you call the cable company.

  • TV and streaming

Setting up a smart TV, logging in to your shows, pairing the remote, fixing the sound, and cancelling what you no longer want.

  • Smart home, light

A video doorbell, smart plugs, or a thermostat app. We do not do any wiring.

While we're here

Small favors are included in every visit at no charge.

How we decide what counts

A favor is included only when all five of these are true.

  1. It takes about 15 minutes or less.
  2. It needs nothing more than a hand screwdriver.
  3. It stays at or below the second step of a household step stool.
  4. It involves no water, gas, wiring, or fuel.
  5. It needs no lifting over about 30 pounds and no moving furniture.

Light and power

  • Change a lightbulb you can reach (you supply the bulb).
  • Reset a tripped breaker, only if the panel is clearly labeled and you point to the right one.
  • Replace batteries in remotes, clocks, thermostats, doorbells, and flashlights.
  • Plug in or move a power strip or surge protector.

Air and comfort

  • Swap a furnace or air filter you can reach (you supply the filter). We write the size on your notes so family can reorder.
  • Reset a thermostat schedule.
  • Replace a slide-in filter in a window air conditioner or air purifier.

Safety

  • Replace smoke and CO detector batteries you can reach, and test the unit.
  • Check that a medical-alert pendant or base is charged and paired.
  • Set up large-button speed dials and emergency contacts on your phone.
  • Place a non-slip bath mat you already have.

Around the house

  • Hang a lightweight picture or calendar on a hook or nail that is already there.
  • Move a box or package under 30 pounds, or bring packages in from the porch.
  • Take the trash or recycling to the curb.
  • Open a stubborn jar or package.
  • Change the time on a microwave, oven clock, or car radio.
  • Replace a paper-towel or toilet-paper roll.
  • Tighten a loose cabinet knob or drawer pull.

Near your devices

  • Clean a screen, keyboard, or phone case.
  • Label chargers and cables, and untangle the cords behind a desk.
  • Set up a charging station with things you already own.

What we don't do

  • Anything on a ladder, or above the second step of a step stool.
  • Plumbing of any kind, including drains and toilet parts.
  • Electrical work beyond a bulb or a battery.
  • Gas appliances, water heaters, furnaces, and dryers.
  • Appliance repair, TV wall mounting, and furniture assembly.
  • Yard work, gutters, snow, and leaves.
  • Pests, mold, and water damage.
  • Lock changes and lockouts.
  • Pet care, personal care, medications, and driving you anywhere.
  • Repairing broken devices, such as cracked screens.
  • Anything your Helper feels is unsafe.

If it's not on this list, we'll note it on your visit report and connect you with someone we trust.
