My printer says it is offline or will not print

Simple checks to get a printer working again, one at a time.

"Offline" means your computer cannot reach the printer. It is usually easy to fix. Try these steps in order. Stop when it prints.

  1. Check the printer itself. Is it turned on? Look for a blinking light or an error message on its small screen. Check that there is paper in the tray and ink or toner left.
  2. Turn it off and on. Switch the printer off. Wait 30 seconds. Switch it on again. Wait until it stops making noise and the lights settle.
  3. Restart your computer. Close your work first. Then restart, and try printing again.
  4. Check the Wi-Fi. Most printers connect to your home Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is the wireless internet in your home. On the printer's small screen, open the Wi-Fi or Network menu. It should show the same network name as your computer. If it says "not connected," it lost the signal.
  5. Check the right printer is chosen. When you press Print, a box lets you pick a printer. Make sure your printer's name is selected, not a different one or a "save as file" choice.
  6. Check the cable. If your printer connects with a USB cable, make sure it is pushed in firmly at both ends.
